増子博子個展「つちかう人々」1月26日（土）〜2月16日（土）

studio J　における2019年1月からの展覧会として「増子博子個展－つちかう人々
」を開催致します。studio J はもとより、増子の関西での初めての発表となります。

増子は大きく分けて二つのタイプの作品を並行して制作しています。それは、大き
なパネルに描かれたモノクロの作品と、日々1枚産み出されるドローイングです。

大きな画面にペンで細密に描かれた作品と、長辺30㎝程度に描かれたラフなドローイングは一見対照的な作品にも見えますが、過去、家族の都合で転居が多かった増子に必要だった、土地との対話がベースになっていると言う意味において両者の根は同じです。
皆さま、関西初の増子博子の個展に何卒ご期待ください。

展覧会に寄せて

私の作品は、「盆栽」をテーマにした細密画と「側（かわ）の器」と名付けたドロ
ーイングの相乗作用により生まれてきます。
盆栽をテーマにした細密画は2006年より制作しています。パネルを鉢に見立て、製図
用のペンでイメージを育てます。イメージは生活している土地との対話の時間から生
まれます。盆栽というモチーフは、人間と自然との関係を考える導き手となってくれ
ます。

「側の器」と称したドローイングは、2013年から続けており、2018年12月の時点で
1200枚以上となりました。「川」の語源は、流れる水を受ける「側（がわ）」からき
ているという説があります。

水の流れを側（かたわ）らから包む器の形は、どんな形
をしているのか。はたして、その器を描くことはできるのか。私は、過去を追い、問
いながら一日一枚描くと決め、制作を続けています。

これまでの私が生活してきた風土で体感したもので絵が育ち、新しい種が生み出され
ます。新種を見つけるために土地との対話をしているのかもしれません。
人は土地をつちかい、土地は人を養います。私の作品と土地との関係も同様です。今
回の個展で、私の作品と土地との対話を感じていただけますと幸いです。

Announcing studio J’s newest exhibition opening January 2019 ‘Hiroko Masuko Solo
Exhibition –Cultivators”. This is Masuko’s first showing in Kansai. Masuko produces her
artwork by working in a parallel process with two different styles. One style is her
monochrome paintings on a panel and another is her drawings which she completes on a
daily basis. The panel work painted in intricate detail and the roughly created 30cm (long
side) drawings may seem contrastive but this is a meaningful process to Masuko who had a
childhood of frequently moving around due to her family’s lifestyle. This gave her the
necessity to harbor the ability of adapting and communicating with each land as she
relocated. Her upbringing and her artworks come from this same root.

On Occasion of Exhibition
My miniature paintings in the theme of ‘Bonsai’ and drawings named ‘KAWA NO UTSUWA’
are created in synergy. I have been producing ‘Bonsai’ works since 2006. Drawing on the
panel as if it were a pot, I start cultivating images with a technical pen. These images are
born through my time spent interacting with the land. The motif of the bonsai becomes a
guide that allows the self to think about the connection between humans and nature.
The drawing ‘KAWA NO UTSUWA’ has been an on-going work since 2013 and as of
December 2018, 1200 works have been created. Theory has it that the word “river” comes
from the etymology of a “vessel” which catches flowing water. What is the shape of the
vessel that hugs the water in from the sides? Could it be possible to draw such a vessel? I
decided to create one drawing per day while tracing back into my past and asking myself
these questions. The drawings are developed through the many climates I experienced
living in and from this a new seed is nurtured. It may be that I am conversing with the land
in search for a new seed. People cultivate land and the land cultivates the people. The same
goes for the connection between the land and my work. I would be thrilled if these
conversations between the land and my work can be felt through my solo exhibition.
