碓井斎子展

studio Jに於ける10月からの展覧会として、碓井斎子展を開催します。

今回碓井斎子の個展は、studio Jでは3度目の個展となります。1977年に創形美術学校　版画科卒業を卒業した碓井は、以後東京を中心に発表を重ねてきました。今回の新作は、老いをテーマにした作品が中心です。かなり以前から老女をテーマにした作品を作っていましたが、木版画と言う体力が必要な製作を続けるにあたり、自身の老いに向き合わざるを得なくなりました。通常、老いはマイナスイメージで受け取られるものです。しかし碓井の表現する老女達は、身体が衰えて行きますが精神までは老いていきません。お気に入りの服や小物に囲まれ、自分の世界を楽しんでいるようにさえ見えます。そのような表現が出来るという事は、碓井自身が生活を楽しみ、若い感性を保っている証拠だと考えます。作品が提示する世界は、日々老いていく我々のある種心の支えにもなるに違いありません。

作家コメント

木版画をはじめてから30年以上たちます。若くて気力も体力もあった頃は、木版画の時間のかかる彫りと刷りの作業も無心になれるのですごく好きでした。けれど今夏の暑さは、集中力と体力をうばわれて辛いものがありました。老いや死について考えることも多くなり、最近は老いた女性をずっと描き続けています。けれども老いに向かう日々は、決して暗いことばかりではありません。より深く自然の営みと一体化している自分を感じ、今までは気にも留めなかった自然の移ろいの日々に、小さな喜びを発見する毎日でもあります。風にふかれて飛んでいく葉っぱのように自然に逆らわず、気負わずペーソスとユーモアを持って、老いに向かう日々を表現できたらと思っています。studio Jでの個展は、コロナ禍もあり5年ぶりとなります。たくさんの方に見ていただけると嬉しいです。

studio J Exhibition Information

We would like to announce the opening of Itsuko Usui exhibition which will be held at studio J from the 14th of October till the 4th of November..

This is Itsuko Usui’s third solo exhibition at studio J. Since graduating in printmaking at Sokei Art Academy in 1977, Usui has exhibited her work mainly in Tokyo.

Her new series focuses on a theme of age. Though she has been creating work surrounding elderly women for some time now, continuing to work with woodblock prints, which require a lot of physical strength to make, now has her confronting her own age. Usually, age is perceived as negative. Though the elderly women that Usui depicts are deteriorating physically, they’re not aging in spirit. They seem to enjoy the world they’re in, surrounded by their favorite clothes and accessories. The fact that she is able to express herself in this way is proof that the artist herself is enjoying her life and maintains a youthful sensibility. The world presented acts as a form of emotional support for those of us finding ourselves growing older day by day.

Artist’s comment

It has been more than 30 years since I started woodblock printing. When I was young and had energy and strength, I really liked the time-consuming carving and printing process because it offered me freedom from obstructive thoughts. This year however, the summer’s heat was hard on me, and sapped my concentration and stamina. I have been thinking a lot about aging and death, and recently I find myself painting old women all the time. However, growing old is not all gloomy. Every day I feel myself becoming more deeply a part of the workings of nature, and I discover small joys in its daily transitions that I had not paid attention to before. Like a leaf blowing in the wind, I hope to express these days not with an overbearing or abrasive attitude towards nature, but with pathos and humor. This will be my first solo exhibition at studio J in five years, which was partly due to the Corona disaster. I hope many people will come to see my work.
